Saint Augustine's Church, Homer, Alaska

St. Augustine’s has two visible ministries in the Homer community – growing seasonal vegetables for the Food Pantry and maintaining a labyrinth that is open to the community.

Garden Ministry for Homer Food Pantry

Garden Ministry

St. Augustine’s has been growing fresh vegetables for the Homer Community Food Pantry since 2010. Over the years we’ve grown broccoli, carrots, radishes, lettuce, kale, chard, and potatoes. At one time all 20 raised beds were producing, but in recent years we’ve reduced our efforts to eight beds. We make weekly produce donations from July – September.

Julie Cesarini Memorial Garden

Julie Cesarini Memorial Garden

Former parishioner Julie Cesarini was a warm hearted, free spirit, who helped so many people in need within our community. Anyone could go to her - the homeless, hungry, and friendless and she would help find them shelter, food, or offer friendship and a warm hug. In honor of Julie and her spirit of loving-kindness, we named our vegetable garden beds that provide for the needy in her memory.

Community Labyrinth

Labyrinth Homer, Alaska

Our labyrinth was originally built in 2009 as a joint project with a youth group from All Saints Episcopal Church in Omaha, Nebraska and later modified with help from members of HoWL (Homer Wilderness Leaders). Recently upgraded in 2019, our labyrinth now has five circuits defined by bricks and a packed gravel surface for easy accessibility. Labyrinth walks are a part of our special prayer services held during the seasons of Lent and Advent. We welcome the community and visitors to walk our labyrinth under safe conditions. For more information on the walking the labyrinth, please see our accompanying brochure.

World Labyrinth Day

World Labyrinth Day

On May 1, 2017, St. Augustine’s hosted our first World Labyrinth Day. For this interfaith celebration, the Homer community and guests from different faith communities joined together to pray a beautiful liturgy of peace, written especially for the event, and walk the labyrinth. Attendees, both young and old, painted prayer flags, planted flower seeds, and enjoyed hot soup and other taste treats. We hope to celebrate World Labyrinth Day with an annual community event each year.
