Saint Augustine's Church, Homer, Alaska

The Episcopal faith embraces the practice “Via Media”, the middle way. As Episcopalians we strive to be open to all people and cultures worldwide and we practice a generous orthodoxy. The Book of Common Prayer (BCP) is our liturgical tradition. Throughout the Episcopal Church’s history, the BCP has been revised according to changing times to remain relevant. We are guided by the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament and their meaning in our daily lives. The spirit of the Episcopal Church lies within this balance of faith and reason which is openly discussed and debated among its followers. The mission of St. Augustine’s Church is to be a community of worship, prayer and service, welcoming all with love and acceptance. We invite you to join us for worship and enjoy our peaceful view overlooking Kachemak Bay.

I have lived and worked all over Alaska the last 54 years: Anchorage, Juneau, Kotzebue, Seldovia, Anvik, Shageluk, Grayling, and in many villages on the Upper Yukon River. I love serving the congregation at St. Augustine’s. We are a vibrant group of women and men who share leadership and ministry and fully understand our call to prayer and hospitality.

A native South Carolinian, I first came to Alaska in the mid-’70s when I flew a small plane up the ALCAN Highway and discovered Homer. Since 2014, I’ve served as a Hospital Chaplain in Anchorage and as a supply priest for multiple churches in the South Central Deanery. Now I divide my time between St. Augustine’s and St. James the Fisherman in Kodiak.

I moved to Homer in 2019 and joined St Augustine’s within months of doing so. I jumped right in and volunteered to be senior warden and a lay leader in January 2020. Now I am continuing as a lay leader, but not as senior warden. I love our congregation and find it very supportive. Also the view from the church is Gorgeous.

I’ve lived in Homer since 1986, and joined St. A’s in 2012. I would have joined years before, had I realized St. A’s existed! I love everything about our church, including our wonderful priests, Reverend Judith and Father Chip, the awesome people in the congregation, and being a lay leader. I also serve as Treasurer.

My husband and I moved to Homer in 1976 and I’ve been a member of St. Augustine’s since 1977. Currently I serve as Clerk/Secretary and am a licensed worship leader. My goal is to inspire each of our members to celebrate their own unique talents as active participants and leaders in the life of our church.
